Wet on Wet Watercolouring: What’s That?

First things first, let’s dive into what this techniques actually entails. The ‘Wet on Wet’ method involves applying wet paint onto a wet surface. This allows the colours to blend seamlessly into one another, avoiding any harsh lines and giving the artwork a soft, organic feel.

What You’ll Need:

  • Watercolour Paper
  • Ink pads (in this tutorial, we’ll be using six colours of the rainbow)
  • Water
  • Craft Mat
  • Water Painter
  • Natural Prints Dies
  • Vellum Cardstock
  • Nature’s Prints Stamp Set
  • Versamark Ink
  • White Embossing Powder
  • White Cardstock
  • Dimensional Adhesive

STEP 1: Prepare Your Palette

Start by pressing your ink pads onto a craft mat, creating a palette of colours. If you don’t have reinkers for all the colours you want to use, don’t worry! you can use your ink pads instead. Once you’ve seleted your colours, add some water to them to the mat to dilute the ink.

STEP 2: The Magic Begins – Wet on Wet Technique

This is where the real fun begins. Dampen a section of your watercolour paper with a water painter. Then dip your water painter into one of the colours on your palette and apply it to the wet area of your paper. This allows the ink to move freely and blend into the surrounding areas without creating harsh lines.

STEP 3: Add the Rainbow

In this tutorial, we’re using the colours of the rainbow: Melon Mambo, Pumpkin Pie, Daffodil Delight, Parakeet Party, Pool Party and Fresh Freesia. Apply the ink in a circular pattern. To guide you in size, you can use the wreath die from the Natural Prints dies. Allow your masterpiece to dry.

STEP 4: Bring it all Together

Once you watercolouring is dry, use the wreath die to cut out your painted circle. Now it’s time for some card assembly. Cut a piece of Vellum Cardstock to size. Stamp a greeting from the Nature’s Prints Stamp Set in Versamark ink onto the Vellum Cardstock and then heat emboss it with White Emobssing Powder.

Attach your wreath to the vellum piece using dimensional adhesive. Then, attached your vellum to a piece of White Cardstock. Finally, attach it all to your Thick White Card base. Voila! You’ve just created a vibrant, handmade card.
